Rachmaninov's six Moments musicaux of 1896 recall those of Schubert and hold up very well against them. Among the Morceaux de fantasie played by Ashkenazy in these 2002–2004 recordings is one of the composer's best-known works: the Prelude in C-sharp Minor, Op. 3, No. 2, of 1892. Song transcriptions and the famous Vocalise round out this program by a Russian pianist who has few peers in this repertoire. "Relatively rarely recorded early Rachmaninov played most affectingly. In general this is not barnstorming stuff. Instead it is full of fantasy and pointers towards the later solo piano masterworks; music to relax with which nevertheless has a challenging edge…. Unmissable."—MusicWeb, UK "Ashkenazy has everything: instinct, intelligence, technique, conviction, curiosity, self-possession, self-doubt, an active sense of humor, and a dead-serious attitude toward his work. Consequently his performances, live and recorded, have character, which is a more important quality than personality."—The Atlantic
