The ancient Scottish and Irish origins of Cape Breton Celtic tunes are allied to New World roots music in this expansive suite of classic and contemporary song. The Cottars' founding members Ciarán and Fiona MacGillivray are joined by Claire Pettit (fiddle, vocals) and Bruce Timmins (vocals, guitars) on a set of jigs ("The Munster Suite") and reels ("Carter MacKenzie's/ The Hurricane/ The Contradiction"), the traditional Gaelic songs "The 23rd of June" (aka "The Jug of Punch") and "Goodnight to You" ("Oidhche Mhath Leibh"), "Song for Stephen Foster" by Gordon Lightfoot, Mark Knopfler's haunting "Fare Thee Well, Northumberland," and two originals: "On a Pier" and "Hymn for N" by Fiona. "A prodigiously talented quartet…. The playing is still virtuosic … and the singing preternaturally sweet."—All Music Guide "For standouts to go alongside the sublime 'Northumberland,' their performance of 'The 23rd of June' … is so good their interpretation evokes images of how it would sound if done by the Chieftains in their prime…. The two originals from Fiona, 'On a Pier’ and 'Hymn for N', bring a special grace to the fore; the latter with deft viola, guitar and piano to underpin her soulful vocals."—Flyin' Shoes Review
