Filmmaker Stephen Frears received a Golden Bear nomination in 2009 at the Berlin Film Festival for his lush direction of this provocative drama about a scandalous love affair set during the opulent decadence of pre–World War I Paris. When famed courtier Lea de Lonval (Michelle Pfeiffer) contemplates retirement, her archrival Madame Peloux (Kathy Bates) asks her to teach her spoiled 19-year-old son Chéri (Rupert Friend) about women. A weekend in Normandy evolves into a lasting relationship until, six years later, Peloux announces that she has found an 18-year-old bride for her son.
