Originally printed in Germany about 1920, this sweetly old-fashioned tale for all ages is an advent calendar of sorts, following the adventures of two children seeking a magical rose from December 6—Saint Nikolaus's Day—to Christmas Eve. When Fritz and his little sister Gretl are visited by Saint Nikolaus they plead for a way to help their ill father. The wise old man tells them of a healing white rose that grows in the icy castle of the Winter King—a great and difficult journey. Else Wenz-Viëtor's petite yet striking images are drawn in a classic illustration style, from the children's cottage under a starry sky to the Christ Child's blessing of the rose.
