This North American release of a 1989 collaboration has already garnered raves abroad. At the time, composer/trumpeter Vince Benedetti was touring with a then-unknown Diana Krall, whom he had met while she was performing as hotel pianist at Zurich’s Central Hotel. Her sophisticated chord voicings and paradoxical combination of laid-back phrasing and emotional depth and intensity are already apparent on this set of ultra-smooth jazz, one with more bite and pungency than usually associated with the genre. The songs—“The News,” “Sunshine Express,” “Detroit Blues,” “Your Destiny,” “Who Are You?” “My Love,” “Evidence”—are mostly by Benedetti, with guitarist/singer Martien Oster supplying smooth harmonies to Krall’s ever-alluring vocals.
