"Even with its cursed baubles, wrathful giants, and shape-shifting gods, Wagner's 'Ring' cycle remains a deeply modern work," writes the New York Times. Indeed, pilgrims have to wait decades for tickets to the four operas at the composer's temple to himself at Bayreuth. Instrumental music from those masterworks is liberally sampled here, with "The Ride of the Valkyries" and "Magic Fire Music" from Die Walküre and Dawn/Siegfried's Rhine Journey, Funeral March, and Finale ("Immolation of the Gods") from Die Götterdämmerung ("Twilight of the Gods"). Other operas sampled are Lohengrin (the Act II prelude), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Act I prelude), and the groundbreaking Tristan und Isolde (Isolde's magnificent "Liebestod" or love-death scene).
