This CD derives from the Swiss radio recordings of what turned out to be the last concerts Sir Georg Solti would conduct before his death, in September 1997. "Midas himself could not have produced such an abundance of wealth, nor Methuselah have seen so much as Sir Georg Solti, who this month celebrates his 85th birthday," wrote Gramophone that year. "When Solti made his first studio recordings a full half-century ago … discs revolved at a sedate 78 revolutions per minute rather than the 200-500 orbits modern CDs achieve. Fifty years later, the history of recorded sound and the history of Solti's career are inextricably linked." "Compared with his earlier studio recording, and even with the one taken from his farewell concert with the Chicago Symphony in 1991, his approach with the Tonhalle Orchestra is mellower, yet everything fits together precisely: the first two movements make a complementary pair, the adagietto never loses its momentum, and the finale pulls the threads together with total conviction."—The Guardian
