New arrangements of 16th, 17th, and 18th century Renaissance and court music roam—like the troubadours of old—all over Europe. The works conjured up with the striking beauty of tone and accuracy of intonation that is so characteristic of the Empire Brass include the King Arthur Overture by Purcell, Les Niais de Sologne by Rameau, a Sarabande by Scarlatti, The Earl of Oxford’s March by Byrd, the Basse Danse Bergeret by Susato, and the Hamelin Gigue by Praetorius. Traditional offerings include “Samhradh, Summertime,” with a vocal by Alannah Fitzgerald, “He Moved Through the Fair,” “Cumulus Sanctus,” and “The Foxhunter Jig.” Concluding the disc is an exhilarating rendition by all forces of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” “The Empire Brass has found a way to combine flash with impeccable musical attainment.”—Boston Herald “The foremost of American brass ensembles.”—Pittsburgh Post Gazette
