When Bill Evans left the seminal Miles Davis Sextet at the end of 1958, he turned permanently to leading his own trio, thereby enriching the entire course of contemporary jazz piano. This 1961 recording, made when his first group had been together for a full year, brilliantly demonstrates his innovative concept of "simultaneous improvisation" with legendary bassist Scott LaFaro. This is especially evident when one compares the bonus, alternate takes of "Beautiful Love," "How Deep Is the Ocean?" and "I Wish I Knew" on this remastered edition with those originally released. Also on the disc are "Haunted Heart," "The Boy Next Door," Davis's "Nardis," and the introspective masterpiece "Elsa."
