Despite his legacy as Hollywood's greatest swashbuckler, Errol Flynn's output of Westerns (eight) exceeds his sword-swinging adventures. In Virginia City (1940), one of his earliest, Flynn plays a Union spy attempting to intercept Randolph Scott's Confederate wagon train of gold from the mines of the film's title. Humphrey Bogart is a hoot as a Mexican bandit. The handsomely produced San Antonio (1945) earned Oscar nominations for art direction and the original song "Some Sunday Morning." In Montana (1950), the Tasmanian-born actor plays an Australian sheepherder at odds with Big Sky cattlemen. Rocky Mountain (1950), his last Western, has Flynn's Confederate officer battling Union soldiers and Shoshone Indians.
