The combination of melody and percussion as well as its sustaining tone make the dulcimer a distinctively hypnotic instrument, especially in the hands of master performer Maggie Sansone. Accompanied by guitar, cittern, mandolin, woodwinds, keyboards, accordion, bodhrán, djembé, and cajón, she blends contemporary and traditional hammered dulcimer styles in suites of reels and jigs as well as in medley of Breton dance music. Other tunes include "Willie's Old Trousers and the Tartan," the Middle Eastern–flavored "Evening Chai," the Italianate "Blue Mottetto," the ethereal "Early Dawn," and "North Sea Crossing," which evokes a sailor's journey over a turbulent sea. "Swiftly, elegantly, soulfully …. Sansone sets into motion nimbly woven instrumentals—some ancient, some original, each charming in its own way."—Washington Post
