Broderick Crawford was awarded an Academy Award for his stunning portrayal of bullheaded backwoods lawyer Willie Stark in this somber but realistic chronicle of raw, brutal political power—a story inspired by the rise and fall of Huey Long, the "Kingfish" who was Louisiana's governor and one-time senator. John Ireland garnered a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role as Stark's tortured right-hand man, while Mercedes McCambridge won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as Sadie Burke, Stark's callous, conniving political aide.
