This famous 1953 production was launched with great hoopla by impresario Sol Hurok, who promoted it as the first opera film in color, with top La Scala and Rome Opera singers and grand sets. Compared to the standards for opera videos today, this production is sorely lacking and more than a bit campy, yet the presence of the two divas Loren and Tebaldi (who dubs the singing) as Aida provides moments to treasure for even the most critical film fan or operagoer. "Fans of the actress will want this, as she is in her youthful prime here and, despite some rather heavy 'darkening' make-up, a gorgeous spectacle in herself.
